Investors should look to energy stocks as stubborn inflation weighs on the stock market amid growing anxiety over whether the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at all this year, according to Wolfe Research. "This inability to adequately tame inflation of course coincides with the reacceleration of Oil and Energy stocks over the past few months," analysts Rob Ginsberg and Read Harvey told clients in a Monday note. The Wolfe analysts said investors should take advantage of any near-term overbought consolidations and make a play for the stock to rise back into the mid $40s. Crude oil and the 10-year breakeven inflation rate, meanwhile, are both on the upswing from multiyear bases, according to the Wolfe analysts. "Needless to say, we want to keep playing Oil and Energy stocks to the upside over near – mid term, which should in turn put continued upward pressure on inflation," the Wolfe analysts said.

Halliburton reported better-than-expected earnings this week, buoyed by a surprisingly strong performance from its North American division — which offset flat-to declining revenues from other geographic segments. The offsetting strength or weakness of various business segments and geographic exposures, particularly for a mature business such as oil services, suggests the range-bound price action that Halliburton's share price has experienced for the past two years could continue. Consequently, if one owns Halliburton shares, consider writing upside calls, particularly now that the company has released earnings. If shares decline and one is assigned the effective purchase price would be $36.42, at which point one could then look to sell upside calls. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

The Big Tech earnings next week could revive a flagging market, or at least give investors direction into where stocks are going from here. Wall Street is hoping next week's megacap tech results will give investors insight into where the artificial intelligence trade is going from here, as a bounce in tech could lift the indexes. These robust gains come after a lackluster year for energy stocks. The energy sector fell roughly 5% in 2023, underperforming the broader S&P 500’s double-digit gains as concerns about the global economy hurt energy demand. Some investors say that energy stocks are poised for more gains, given the continued geopolitical turmoil and the US economy’s resilience. Energy stocks often do well when the economy is strong, since there’s more energy demand to fuel goods- and services production. Plug Power shares have slipped 34% this year, SolarEdge Technologies shares have tumbled 25% and Enphase Energy shares have slid 8%.

With this view in mind, I am looking for a bearish setup in the VanEck Oil Services ETF (OIH) . This ETF seeks to track the largest, most liquid companies involved in oil drilling and selling oil equipment based on market capitalization. However, my trading platform indicates that this will tie up $5,500 of portfolio margin, a significant amount for a potential profit of just $430. Yet, since I'm paying a debit for the $365 call, it also decreases my profit potential from $430 to $133. I will need a good trade management plan with a stop loss in case the trade starts going against me.

The move higher for energy stocks comes as West Texas Intermediate crude oil approaches the mid-2022 highs of $88.31 per barrel. Theoretically, one can make bullish bets on oil using an ETF, such as the United States Oil Fund (USO) . However, I would caution against using this as an investment vehicle to make a long-term bullish bet on oil. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Wednesday reviewed oil service stocks after the sector's major players reported earnings, telling investors why he thinks SLB and Halliburton have room to run. Cramer said he's optimistic on these stocks after their earnings showed strong international business and efficient rigs. Both stocks have seen gains in the sessions since their reports, with Halliburton up 4.33% by Wednesday's close and SLB up 2.48%"I think SLB and Halliburton deserve all of this upside and more," Cramer said. Yes, the growth outlook for the oil service industry is better than I thought going into earnings, primarily thanks to increased activity overseas." He wondered if these oil service companies would become "victims of their own efficiency," with producers needing to purchase fewer rigs because each one can generate more oil than in the past.

(Reuters) - Altivia Chemical was working to contain a toxic gas leak from its LaPorte, Texas, plant on Monday, as the city's emergency management agency ordered some nearby residents and five neighboring facilities to shelter in place out of caution. Halliburton's Multi-Chem Bayport site, Stepan's Pasadena facility, and three others belonging to Kuraray Americas, Evonik, and NCTI, were sheltering in place after the offsite release of a toxic gas called phosgene, according to community alerts. Located about 30 miles (48 km) east of Houston, La Porte's Office of Emergency Management (LPOEM) said the city issued a cautionary shelter-in-place until the amount of phosgene released is determined. "A chemical emergency has occurred and residents south of Fairmont between Bay Area and S. 16th Street need to immediately shelter in place," LPOEM said on X, formerly Twitter. Exposure to phosgene may cause vomiting, breathing difficulty, chest pain and, when liquid, frostbite.
